The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
