The Boss Enzo Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as The 'Most Difficult Two Days' at the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to the weekend's victory against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The Italian made a rather mysterious statement in his after-game interview even after notching a 2-0 win at home through goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points sent Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to consecutive fixtures.

Yet, when questioned about Gusto's assist and general performance, Maresca surprisingly shared his displeasure over the previous two days at the organization.

"The way the squad are eager to learn has been excellent and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with so many challenges, they are doing very well after a difficult week," he stated.

"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the most difficult because many people didn't support us."

When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City manager continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I love the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."

Fitness and Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and disciplinary problems, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.

"I really praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are performing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our best player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to acknowledge because the work from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's success over Everton cemented their standing in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was not immediately clear who or what caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that window, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-match press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was hard to discern whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if social media comments were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
