Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Formal Protests by Iran and Egypt
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations throughout the city amid the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations and City Celebrations
Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the stadium.
“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Legal Context Behind the Objections
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “objections against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues during games. While its rules forbid political signage with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of flags being seized.
