No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Police Raid on Organized Crime
At least 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's history.
Four security agents lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes erupted when around 2,500 police forces moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The area of favelas adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities said at least 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, along with multiple guns.
