A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
