The child of former South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terror charges at the beginning of her court case in the harbor city of Durban city.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over statements she made on social media in the past during fatal protests in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.

A seven-day period of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, resulted in at least 300 individuals killed and caused damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

She has been accused of encouraging this turmoil and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Context of the Legal Matter

The unrest were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a legal directive to give evidence at an probe into claims of impropriety while he was in power.

She has always denied the allegations against her, with her legal representative in the past calling the government's case as unsubstantiated.

She has also repeatedly said the allegations against her were an bid to resolve political grievances with her parent after he started his own political party and campaigned against the ruling party.

Support and Court Representation

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and kinship harassment" against the former president and his family.

A handful of backers from her political organization, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has maintained that the testimony presented by the state is unconvincing and lacks substantial proof for a guilty verdict.

Key Points of the Legal Proceedings

  • Online posts from 2019 form the core of the state's evidence
  • Deadly unrest in July 2021 resulted in major fatalities and financial losses
  • The individual on trial faces multiple charges of provocation to unrest
