A significant manufacturing zone located on the outskirts of Jakarta is dealing with nuclear pollution following an official taskforce detected traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing facilities within the site, that encompasses companies shipping chilled seafood.

Officials issued an advisory advising suppliers and sellers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, although the detected level was well under the agency's intervention limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an acute risk to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of concern after longer term, ongoing low dose contact (for example through eating of contaminated products or liquid over time) is an elevated chance of cancer, resulting from harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Examinations

Radioactivity tests showed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial zone were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not identify the twenty-one additional production sites, but said they would promptly undergo decontamination processes carried out by the country's atomic energy authority.

The environment minister stated that people residing in strongly polluted zones would be relocated until the location was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Medical officials also performed checks on nearby employees and people located close to the manufacturing zone, finding nine individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to return home.
